Alor, East Nusa Tenggara – Indonesia’s Untouched Dive Frontier

Tucked away in the eastern reaches of the Indonesian archipelago, Alor is a remote diving gem known for its pristine reefs, powerful currents, and dramatic underwater topography. Still off the beaten track, it offers spectacular diving with vibrant coral walls, rare critters, and thrilling pelagic encounters—all with hardly another diver in sight.

Location & Accessibility

Alor is part of the Alor Archipelago in East Nusa Tenggara. Most divers fly into Alor’s Mali Airport (ARD) via Kupang, the capital of West Timor. While travel takes some effort, the rewards are immense—Alor remains one of Indonesia’s least crowded and most biodiverse dive destinations.

Diverse Diving Encounters

Alor offers a rare mix of wide-angle and macro opportunities:

  • Macro lovers can search for rhinopias, pygmy seahorses, harlequin shrimp, and nudibranchs in sheltered bays and black sand slopes.

  • Big fish and pelagics like thresher sharks, mola mola, and schooling tuna are seen in the nutrient-rich straits.

  • Strong currents in certain sites bring vibrant coral reefs to life, ideal for drift dives and experienced divers.

  • Traditional fishing villages and volcanic landscapes add cultural and scenic richness topside.
